The only 100% I care about

"I've survived 100% of my bad, horrible, and ugly days."

Walk away from the negativity holding you back.

My counselor shared this with me during our last session.

We were talking about getting through difficult times and ways to motivate ourselves when we reach those points where we feel like we have nothing left in us. The session previous to this, I was in one of those times.

I was in a slump and I knew it. For whatever reason, things weren't going well. I didn't even need things to go my way anymore, but with every passing day for about two weeks, I felt like life was antagonizing me at every turn. At one point, I was waiting for something to strike me - out of spite, or out of mercy - so that I wouldn't have to continue on.

This slump left me extremely disappointed in myself. I been over this time and time again, and it seemed like I couldn't learn. But as I opened my eyes to start a new day, I didn't feel useful. I didn't feel like myself. But I told myself to keep going.

These feelings weren't new for me, and I knew that.

Thankfully, I was able to get through this period once again with the support of my counselor and people around me.

My counselor commented on the change and she said that she could feel my energy. We talked some more about good days and bad days, and then shared that fact that she read from somewhere.

This really pulled everything into perspective for me. Every time I find myself in a slump, I always feel like it's the worst thing in the world. I feel helpless and hopeless, and I can't imagine life on the other side.

The darkness is really daunting sometimes, and it's impossible to see through it.

But in the same way that night turns into day, with patience we can get through anything.

People used to tell me that: to not give up and to have patience.

But patience wears thin sometimes. I get that.

So here's something else: some of the "futures" that you've worried about are now "pasts". You may have worried tirelessly about something before, felt like you wouldn't be able to make it, or felt like giving up. But this isn't something new for you: you've been here before, and you've conquered it before.

You have survived 100% of your bad, horrible, and ugly days.

And the crazier part? You wouldn't be here without them.

We are formed and shaped by our experiences. We take the good with the bad and we grow and through them. Better still, we aren't defined by our bad days: we are defined by what we learn from them.

So if you find yourself in a slump right now, I want you to know that I'm right there with you. If you feel like there is no one in your corner, I'll be there for you. And remember: with the bad comes the good. You've survived this many times before, and you will survive it again.
