You could call me a craft beer snob, and I wouldn't be opposed to it.
Truth be told, over the past year and a bit I have become obsessed with craft beer. Vancouver's craft beer culture extends far beyond my years of legality, but it wasn't until recently that it has exploded into what it is today: aesthetically pleasing tasting rooms, Insta-worthy beer flights, and of course, amazing beers of various varieties.
When I turned 19, I vowed that I wouldn't be a beer person. But 19 year old me was pretty young and naive, and as it turns out, I don't actually mind the taste. In fact, I would probably choose a beer over wine, cocktails, or hard liquor.
This list is by no means exhaustive, and of course, I'm still exploring! As I explore new places, I anticipate that this list will definitely change!
So, here are my top five favourite places for beer in Vancouver:
5. Doan's Craft Brewing Company
Rounding out my top 5 is the very first brush with craft beer in this city. Doan's Craft Brewing Company (1830 Powell Street) is located in a tiny little house, which used to house neighbouring Powell Brewery before it got big! Inside there is a gorgeous mural, communal seating, and a old-school Pac Man arcade machine to bring back a sense of nostalgia. And of course, enjoy a beer or two and let the good times roll.
4. Andina Brewing Company
East Van (#YeastVan) is home to so many amazing breweries, but the one that you absolutely can't miss is Andina Brewing Company (1507 Powell Street). I say that you can't miss it because 1) the beer is awesome and unique and 2) the building is bright yellow, so it's actually impossible to miss! Andina brings together the brewing culture of the Pacific Northwest with their South American roots, which influences their beer and snacks. If you're into the idea of pairing your beer with plantain nachos or ceviche, this is the place for you!
3. Callister Brewing Company
If you are super indecisive like me, Callister Brewing Company (1338 Franklin Street) could be both a blessing and a curse. On the one hand, there is plenty of beer to choose from, but this could make the decision process very, very difficult! Callister is a co-working brewery, which means that different brewmasters come together to brew beer together. If you're indecisive, I would suggest getting a flight so that you can try a little bit of everything... and maybe convince your friends to get flights too!
2. Faculty Brewing Co.
Think craft beer isn't fancy? Faculty Brewing Co. (1830 Ontario Street) puts a velvet rope up when the tasting room is at capacity. A super minimalistic space, I love the cozy atmosphere that Faculty has, both with the people that you're drinking with and also the actual brewing equipment. Faculty offers plenty of snacks and some amazing beer to choose from, which rotates almost every single day!
1. Parallel 49 Brewing
At the top of my list is the newly renovated Parallel 49 Brewing (1950 Triumph Street)! Aside from the fact that I LOVE their beer and probably am most familiar with it, their new tasting room is a sight to behold. There is plenty of seating space, an impressive display of beer taps, and a food truck kitchen inside the building. As an added bonus, their patio is perfect for warmer days. If you're looking for a good time, Parallel 49 is the place to be!
So raise your glasses to the amazing craft beer culture in Vancouver - cheers!
