WOW, it has been a while since I've written! I hope to have more to say about my absence in a future post, but for now, I wanted to drop by to share something that's been on my heart for a long time.
My 24th year was spent exclusively during this time of pandemic. And as I started to work towards my 25th birthday, I spent a lot of time thinking about what I wanted to do. Many who know me know that I'm a huge milestone keeper, and 25 (at least to me) is a milestone for the books!
And so, I decided that for my 25th birthday I wanted to do some fundraising for a cause that was important to me, and I'd love for you to join me in this journey!
My goal is to raise $2500 for Domestic Abuse Services - Our Lady of Good Counsel Society.
Why this cause?
I am grateful for the family I have. Like many families, we may have our disagreements and fights from time to time, but every single time we are able to work things through and continue to love one another and move on, together.
However, I've come to see that this is a real privilege. This isn't always the case for some families who experience domestic abuse, partner violence, and physical/emotional/sexual assault at the hands of other family members. Of all reported violent crime in 2016, more than one quarter (26%) resulted from family violence. Almost 67% of family violence victims were women and girls. (source)
With the COVID-19 pandemic, I can imagine that this situation has worsened. As many people are encouraged (or ordered) to stay at home and prevent the spread of the virus, those who experience this type of family violence are at increased risk for harm. Services that once were offered or accessed in person may need to change their tactics in order to be conducted safely, and due to increased time at home, many victims may not feel it is safe to report or call for help.
As I continued to read more into this pandemic of gender-based violence and family violence, it reminded me of past relationships that I've been in where verbal and physical abuse was present. By the grace of God, I was able to leave those relationships - but unfortunately for many, this is not an option.
This is where Domestic Abuse Services - Our Lady of Good Counsel Society comes in.
Our Lady of Good Counsel Society assists anyone seeking safety or recovery from domestic abuse regardless of religious denomination, race, sex, or creed. The Society was founded the year before I was born, and operates in the Archdiocese of Vancouver. They offer support and assistance in a variety of ways, including:
second-stage safe housing through Eva’s House.
provides an information HelpLine – 365 days a year.
provides one-on-one support and referrals.
provides access to spiritual, legal, financial and psychological resources to assist victims of domestic abuse.
offers educational programs and speaker-series to groups of people regarding domestic abuse and relationship violence.
As mentioned above, my goal is to raise $2500 for Domestic Abuse Services - Our Lady of Good Counsel Society - and I need your help to get there!
I was late in getting this up and running, so from now to Mother's Day (May 9), I invite you to join me in raising awareness and funds for this cause that is doing so much to help families in the Lower Mainland.
To make it as straightforward as possible and to make sure that DAS-OLGC receives 100% of your donation, I invite you to go to their donation form directly: https://domesticabuseservices.ca/get-involved/donations/
